Elaine Koehler was born and grew up in Kansas. She always had an interest in creating and working with her hands. In 1962 she received a degree in Secondary Art Education from Abilene Christian College in Abilene, TX. A favorite class was charcoal life drawing. No doubt, the love of pastels grew from that class.
Pastels allow for painting techniques by using the side of the pastel stick to paint a wide color swath, or for drawing with a variety of lines using the stick edges. There is also a nearly endless variety of colors.
Elaine enjoys painting en plein air but also works with reference photos to recall places that have inspired her to paint. The search for subject matter causes a heightened awareness of God's beautiful and awesome creation. This is an aspect of the process of art making that is most rewarding.
